Name, location and villages

What does Wolluk mean?

Wolluk is the Brabant name for Waalwijk, the name residents use for their town in dialect. Omroep Brabant describes it as the old spelling of the place name. The dialect book of the local dialect group is called Wollukse praot. In February 2026 the mayor and aldermen turned down bilingual place-name signs, but the name lives on, for example in Welkom in Wolluk.

Which villages belong to the municipality of Waalwijk?

The municipality of Waalwijk consists of three villages, Waalwijk, Sprang-Capelle and Waspik. The municipality uses the same division for its weekly markets, with its own market day for each village. Waalwijk itself is the largest village, with the centre around the Raadhuisplein (town hall square). The key figures and the breakdown by village are on the homepage.

Which province is Waalwijk in?

Waalwijk lies in the province of North Brabant, in the De Langstraat area. The nearest large cities are Tilburg, 's-Hertogenbosch and Breda. You reach the town via the A59 and the N261. What is De Langstraat?

De Langstraat is the region around Waalwijk and consists of the four municipalities of Geertruidenberg, Heusden, Loon op Zand and Waalwijk. The area lies between the Bergsche Maas in the north and the Loonse en Drunense Duinen in the south. The regional tourist organisation Bezoek de Langstraat keeps track of what is on offer across the whole area.

Why is Waalwijk called the shoe town?

Waalwijk has long been known for leather and shoes. The big factories have disappeared from the streets, but you can still see that past in the centre, the town centre management reports. What is the Schoenenkwartier?

The Schoenenkwartier is a museum, knowledge centre and shoe lab in one, on the Raadhuisplein. The collection numbers around 20,000 objects. The first shoe museum opened in 1954 in a small building on the Kloosterwerf. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Monday. Does Waalwijk have a railway station?

No. Until 1950 Waalwijk had a station on the railway between Lage Zwaluwe and 's-Hertogenbosch, but that line no longer exists. You take the train to Tilburg or 's-Hertogenbosch and then the bus to the Vredesplein bus station. Route numbers and tips are on the page about getting there.

Is parking in Waalwijk free?

Not always. Paid parking applies in the centre from Monday to Saturday from 09.00 to 18.00, and until 21.00 on Friday. Outside those hours, and so also on Sunday, you park for free. Charges, car parks and a free alternative within walking distance are on the page about getting there.

When is the market in Waalwijk?

The weekly market in Waalwijk town centre is on Wednesday from 13.00 to 17.00, on the Grotestraat, the Stationsstraat and the Raadhuisplein. Sprang-Capelle and Waspik each have their own market morning. All times for each village are on the page about interiors and shopping.

When are the Sunday shopping days in Waalwijk?

In 2026 there is Sunday shopping in Waalwijk town centre on the last Sunday of every month. In December there are extra Sundays, on 13, 20 and 27 December. The town centre management keeps the list on Welkom in Wolluk. The events page of this site shows which events fall on those Sundays.

Which league do RKC Waalwijk play in?

What is the Lido in Waalwijk?

The Lido is the local name for the Het Hoefsven recreation area, on the edge of Waalwijk against the Loonse en Drunense Duinen. There is a playground, a deer park, a rowing pond and woodland, and you can swim outdoors there without supervision. When is the IJsparadijs in Waalwijk?

The Waalwijk IJsparadijs (ice paradise) fills the Raadhuisplein from Saturday 12 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. It is a covered skating rink with skate hire and a bar that is free to enter.
